Albert Frederick Pollard was born on 16 December 1869. He received a scholarship to Jesus College, Oxford University, where he attended the Union and rowed in the college eight. At Oxford he received a first class degree in History. In 1893, Pollard obtained the assistant editorship of the Dictionary of National Biography where he remained for nine years. Josiah Clement Wedgwood (1872-1943), Member of Parliament for Newcastle-under-Lyme, 1906-1942, and Lieutenant Commander, RNVR (Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve) and RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service), served on the Western Front, the Dardenelles and East Africa, 1914-1916, before serving on the Mesopotamia Commission in 1916, as Assistant Director, Trench Warfare, in 1917 and in Siberia in 1918.
